Plant Life in the City: "Real World Art Writing"

image6
I'm excited about our new unit because it gets us out of thinking about writing as something that only happens in school. This is Real World Art Writing (RWAW).

Here is the link to information about this project: Plant Life in the City, curated by our amazing colleague, JaQuanne Leroy. In particular, click on the Fellowship tab.

By successfully completing the coursework over the next two weeks, you will have everything ready to submit an application to this fellowship program, (deadline February 7). You might be awarded $500. However, please keep in mind that you are not required to submit an application.

The first part is an Artist Statement: "In 300 words or less, describe your work as an artist and your philosophy. Describe your interest in the environment and/or environmental justice, and why you would like to participate in the fellowship."

A finished draft of your Artist Statement (250-325 words) is due next Tuesday, January 28. Print a physical copy of your draft and bring it to class for small group work-shopping. The final version is due next Thursday, January 30. Staple a copy of your draft to the back of your final version. Bring this to class. Also upload the final version to Populi.

The second part is your Artist CV/Resume: "Submit an outline of your education, exhibitions, and experience in the art field."

A finished draft of your Artist CV/Resume (it should fit on a single page) is due Tuesday, February 4. Print a physical copy of your CV draft and bring it to class for small group work-shopping. The final version is due on Thursday February 4. Staple a copy of your draft to the back of your final version. Bring this to class. Also upload the final version to Populi.

For inspiration and background information, here's a TED video from Greta Thunberg.

Together, this is a 10 point assignment (5 points for each). Questions? See me or email me at csmith@dcad.edu
